Jun 10, 2025Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was recently arrested by federal agents, detained, and charged by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey by criminal complaint with trespassing at a migrant detention facility in Newark. Friedman Kaplan partner Rahul Agarwal, along with co-counsel Raymond Brown and Wanda Akin, defended Mayor Baraka, ultimately securing the dismissal, with prejudice, of the charge, in just under two weeks. Beaumont completed an expedited trial of a Section 225 action in the Delaware Court of Chancery which challenged a 2024 liability management exercise undertaken by Del Monte Foods, Inc. with an ad hoc group of its first-lien lenders. The resulting liability management transaction became the subject of hotly contested litigation during Serta’s 2023 Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. Feb 28, 2025Friedman Kaplan obtained the dismissal with prejudice of an $85 million lawsuit that was initially filed in 2021 by a New York City construction developer against now defunct Signature Bank and several of its subsidiaries. In its decision, a New York federal court enforced several provisions in Signature Bank’s account agreement that barred the developer's claims, and the dismissal is a complete victory for Friedman Kaplan’s client, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as Receiver for Signature Bank.
