Kent K. Anker, Amy C. Brown and Mala Ahuja Harker Named Litigation Partners FKSA litigation associates Kent K. Anker, Amy C. Brown, and Mala Ahuja Harker have been named partners in the firm, effective January 1, 2008. Kent K. Anker concentrates in complex commercial and criminal litigation involving a wide variety of industries, representing clients in New York state courts, federal courts across the country, and arbitration tribunals. His matters have included representing a commercial developer in insurance, contract, and tort litigations arising from the destruction of 7 World Trade Center on September 11, 2001; multiple actions in federal and state trial, bankruptcy, and appellate courts involving allegations of statutory violations, breaches of fiduciary duty, and fraud arising out of the merger of a closely-held corporation; defense of a national law firm against fraud allegations; representation of an individual involved in a criminal antitrust investigation of the airline industry; a civil antitrust action concerning standard-setting in the wireless industry; disputes arising out of the sale of an international fund management company; a suit on behalf of institutional investors against a Big Four accounting firm; price-fixing allegations in the tobacco industry; and arbitration and injunction actions on behalf of an international brewer. Mr. Anker also represented families before the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund. Mr. Anker graduated with honors in 1991 from Wesleyan University and magna cum laude in 1998 from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Journal on Legislation. Early in his career, Mr. Anker worked as an education lobbyist, lobbying elected officials in Albany, Washington, D.C., and New York City. He remains active in education reform efforts locally and nationally, serving on the board of Education Reform Now Advocacy and as a member of the Committee on Education and the Law of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He practiced at Willkie Farr & Gallagher and Boies, Schiller & Flexner before joining FKSA in 2002. Amy C. Brown's practice involves complex commercial litigation, securities litigation, employment litigation and arbitration, and white-collar criminal defense. Her recent matters include representing more than ninety major institutional investors, funds of funds, pension funds, and individuals who lost more than $580 million in the Lancer hedge funds in litigation against the funds' auditor, administrators, directors, and prime broker/custodian; a Latin American financial institution in an NASD arbitration against a major broker-dealer concerning the loss of securities; major financial institutions in both arbitrations and litigations involving unfair competition, misappropriation of trade secrets, and other employment-related claims; a real estate development company in cases involving claims of gender discrimination and retaliation; a major electronics manufacturer in a national class action alleging consumer fraud, deceptive advertising, and breach of warranty; and individuals and corporations in matters involving allegations of securities fraud, money laundering, and Medicare fraud. Ms. Brown graduated summa cum laude from Boston University in 1996. She received her law degree magna cum laude in 1999 from New York University School of Law, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif and Associate Editor of the New York University Law Review. She was associated with Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom before joining FKSA in 2003. Mala Ahuja Harker focuses her practice on complex commercial litigation. Her recent matters include representation of a major financial institution in an arbitration arising from the hiring of institutional sales representatives from a competitor; former directors of a quasi-governmental authority in connection with claims related to the collapse of Enron; a general partner and partnership in connection with claims for breach of fiduciary duty and fraud; and defendants involved in a variety of securities litigations. Ms. Harker graduated with honors in 1996 from Washington University. She received her law degree in 1999 from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she was a finalist and winner of the best brief in the Edwin R. Keedy Cup Moot Court Competition. She practiced at Swidler Berlin Shereff Friedman in Washington, D.C. and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison before joining FKSA in 2003. Ms. Harker is also admitted in Virginia. She is a member of the South Asian Bar Association of New York, and an associate board member of the Urban Justice Center. With the selection of these new partners, nearly 30% of Friedman Kaplan's partners are women, including six of the ten most recent partners. |
