Philip A. Wellner
Philip A. Wellner's practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, appellate litigation, and white-collar criminal defense. His recent matters include representation of a pair of hedge funds in litigation against their former prime broker, a hedge fund in litigation against a trading counterparty, physicians in federal health care fraud investigations, and a broker-dealer in a software licensing dispute. Mr. Wellner also is active in providing pro bono legal services, including representiton of victims of flooding in Upstate New York in the wake of Hurricane Irene, and indigent criminal defendants in appeals of their convictions.
Mr. Wellner graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in business management and marketing in 1996, and received his M.B.A. from University of Phoenix in 2004. In 2006, he received his J.D. magna cum laude from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where he served as Editor in Chief of the Cardozo Law Review and received the Felix Frankfurter Award for outstanding academic achievement. Mr. Wellner previously practiced at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP.
Mr. Wellner is the author of Note, Effective Compliance Programs and Corporate Criminal Prosecutions, 27 Cardozo L. Rev. 497 (2005). He also is the co-author of two articles published in the New York Law Journal: Subtle Shifts on Attorney-Client Privilege, N.Y.L.J., Apr. 3, 2007 (with Janice Mac Avoy), and Beware the Digital Minefield, N.Y.L.J., May 19, 2008 (with Michael B. de Leeuw).
Mr. Wellner currently serves on the New York State Bar Association's Committees on Appellate Practice and the Commercial Division. He also is a member of the Pro Bono Panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and serves on the Junior Advisory Board for the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. He is fluent in French and Latvian. |
